Writing Good Page Titles

One of the most important aspects of search engine friendly web page design is writing clear and concise page titles which are also known as title tags. I’m referring to the title that appears at the top of your web browser which is also the title that is displayed in the search engine results.

Search engine algorithms place a substantial weighting on the page title when determining rankings. A good page title is as important as having well written text copy and quality inbound links. Getting the page title right will give your page a much better chance of ranking well in the search engines.

Here are a few tips when writing your page titles.

  • Only use words that appear in the body text of your web page.
  • Limit the page title to about 80 characters including spaces.
  • Make sure the page title looks neat and professional.
  • Avoid cramming additional keywords in the page title just because they appear in the body text.
  • The page title should always make sense to the reader.

Here are some examples of how good page titles should look. I’ve made up the fictional cleaning company Go Cleaners to use for the example.

  • Fabric & Upholstery Cleaning | Go Cleaners
  • Window Cleaning | Go Cleaners
  • Carpet Cleaning – Domestic & Commercial | Go Cleaners
  • About Us | Go Cleaners

A well written page title will only be effective if the content on the page is good. So if you follow these tips, have good quality page content and a few quality inbound links you should be on your way to achieving improved search engine rankings.
